MEXICAN FIESTA at COWICHAN BAY

Great weather, great food, great fun! This rally started off with everything right! 44 rigs in attendance including 7 “Family & Friends”. Some of the folks living in Cowichan Bay were very envious and came over to enquire about joining us. We have 2 prospective new members! Thursday evening after a wonderful pot luck dinner, we all enjoyed Spanish Bingo provided by Laurel & Wayne Macauley. We had cash prizes and then for the full card we had cash and a huge basket stuffed with Mexican treats. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed a fun evening.

Pancakes, fruit and sausages started Friday off and then day trips to the Cowichan Exhibition, exploring or just enjoying the sights around our rally area. Like last year, otters, seals and many kinds of birds were sighted nearby. During the day a Piggy was roasting on the fire and at dinner we ate her all up with beans and salad. Josie Williams supplied desserts which included a beautiful Mexican Tres Leche cake. This “3 milks” cake was a real hit. Also, Empanaditas, little filled pastries typical of Mexico. Three more layered desserts rounded out the meal. After this we began the “Veggie Races” which were very entertaining. Rhonda Unicume and Audrey Hauge made racers which managed to stay together long enough to win their categories. Bob Orr presented a frozen cantaloupe with an axle through it and wheels drawn on. The cantaloupe made such a superior racer that the judges decided Bob should win the distance prize even though Bob entered a “fruit”. Nice job, Bob!

Saturday began with Ham & Eggs and another warm and sunny day. Quite a few people went into Duncan to check out the Saturday Market and came back with treasures. Some folks picked blackberries and some just ate them! Tacos were served for dinner with a huge bowl of contributed fresh fruit. 40 people participated in the “Minute to Win It” games and the roar of the crowd was overwhelming. Lots and lots of laughter.

After a continental breakfast Sunday, the draw was made for the Ken Williams award and won by Gary Giles. Gregs’ RV in Duncan generously supplied a gas campfire for a door prize and new member Bent Pedersen was the grand winner. The tent was dismantled, trailer stowed and 23 of the attendees left. We had 21 units stay over for another night and leave Monday morning. Another very good rally!

Scheduled for 2012;

MAY end of: we are trying for the Cowichan Exhibition Grounds for a “Many hosts” Rally.

JUNE: We discussed going as a group to the Northwest Area Rally at The Mill Casino in Coos Bay, Oregon ... should be lots of fun.

JULY: We shall try for the Native Campground at Qualicum Bay.

WE NEED SUGGESTIONS FOR AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER 2012

Have a safe, happy and warm winter, see you next year.
Sandy

National Director Report

FMCA 86th International Convention, Madison, Wisconsin, August 10, 2011

The meeting was called to order by Acting National President, Judy Czarsty.  There were 373 Delegates present, out of a possible 487; a quorum of 78% was established.  The President’s report included events that have taken place since Judy took over as Acting President.  These events include: the hiring of Bradford Koshland as FMCA’s Executive Director, the creation of FMCAssist, FMCA’s own medical evacuation policy and the creation of FMCA Connections, with its many new member benefit programs and discounts.(check out www.fmca.com for more details)

The major concern is the decline in membership which relates to a decline in revenue.  The current membership is approximately 89,000.  FMCA conventions are not being well attended, in spite, of trying to add new concepts to the programs at the conventions.  The Membership and Member Services Department along with the Membership Committee have been developing new programs to help with the recruitment of new members.

The Executive Director’s report showed the resignation of Beverly Spurgeon, Director of Member Services and another full time staff member in mail forwarding.  On June 1, 2011, the Directors, including the Executive Director, took a $5000 cut in salary and on August 1, 2011, the Director of Administrative Services and the Executive Director took another $10000 cut in salary.  The result is a total savings of $45000. Mr. Koshland has made many other positive changes to the operations of FMCA. Obviously, the Acting President, the Executive Director and the Executive Board are very focused on watching our income and expenses in order to keep FMCA a very viable for the future.

The Finance Committee report was given by Wil Young, FMCA Treasurer.  The 2011 budget was a 9 month budget.  It has not done as well as projected.  Many changes are in the future plans for FMCA in the Cincinnati offices, wage reviews are being done, possible office reorganization is being considered and new benefits for members are being investigated.  The filing of amended tax returns has resulted in a $1.3 million refund; this was reinvested.  With minor changes, the proposed 2012 budget was adopted. A couple of the changes were:  the stopping of double dipping (i.e. two members traveling in the same coach receiving reimbursement) and the Governing Board voting to eliminate their stipend for the 2012 convention in Indianapolis...
Future Conventions were discussed and the following were approved:
Indianapolis, Indiana – Summer, 2012
Hutchinson, Kansas – Summer, 2013(FMCA’s 50th Anniversary Celebration)
Perry, Georgia – Winter, 2014

FMCA National Officer Elections were held:
Charlie Schrenkel – National President
Allen Rein – National Senior Vice President
Vicky Ferrari – National Secretary
Wil Young – National Treasurer

Submitted by, Kathie Balogh, National Director, Vancouver Islanders

NOTE:  Since the Madison Convention, other cost cutting changes have been made as follows:
Lana Makin, Director of Administrative Services has retired and the position will not be filled.
Jerry Yeatts, Director of Conventions has moved to Director of Membership Services, the Director of Conventions position will be filled as an Event Coordinator position (cost savings).
The Event Coordinator will be Chris Lusk from the convention department.

MEXICAN FIESTA Sept. 8, 9, & 10

We will be entering the site after NOON on Sept. 8th.  Please remember, this is a working industrial site, watch for big trucks (and berry pickers!)  The whole area is open, so there is plenty of room. (See Map in earlier Post, Coordinates are below)  We have a large attendance, this time 42 RV’s ...if you have a shade structure or tent we could add onto our dining tent, it would be appreciated.   Please bring any narrow tables and your chairs for the dining tent. Thursday Dinner will be pot luck, last names P to Y please bring a main dish, last names F-O please bring a side or salad and last names A-E please bring a dessert.  Dinner will be followed by “Spanish Bingo” at $3.00 per card.  Proceeds will be used for prizes.

Friday breakfast will be pancakes, sausage and fruit from 7 AM until 8:30 AM.  The Roast pig will be cooking all day for our dinner and this day we suggest you make a trip to the Cowichan Exhibition.  This is a great Fall Fair and has been running for 143 years.  Later in the day we would appreciate help getting appies out and preparing the beans, salad and Pico de Gallo for dinner.   Typical Mexican desserts will be provided.   After dinner the “Vegetable Races” begin.  Any vegetable is eligible (zucchini is great!) for these races, as long as it has an axle through it and some wheels.  We are trying for lights in the evenings this time, so please bring your quarters for “Left, Right and Center” or “Pass the Ace” later on.

On Saturday for breakfast we are serving Ham, Eggs to order and Hash browns.  An “experienced” Medical Travel Insurance rep may come to talk to us this morning.  At 2:30 everyone is invited to help with preparations for our Taco dinner.  We will be chopping peppers, grating cheese and slicing lettuce so be prepared to help!   Every coach to bring 1 ½ cups only of fresh, canned or frozen fruit for dessert.  Whip cream provided.  Following dinner we will have a rousing round of “Minute to Win It” based on the popular TV show.

Sunday will be muffins and bagels for breakfast, followed by dismantling of the tents.  If you plan on staying over for Sunday night, at an extra cost of $10 per unit, all further meals will be on your own.  We must exit Monday morning before 11 AM.

Looking forward to seeing you all!

BUTTLE LAKE RALLY REPORT

This rally was a no-host affair, but the attendees outdid themselves!  This will read like a food review, but everyone deserves a big pat on the back.  Many thanks to those who prepared and delivered such great meals. Thank you to Mick and Gale (I am sure Betty did something as well) for cooking anything we would let them.  Thank you to Laurel Macauley for bringing along contributions from the Port Hardy rally.  People – you all did great!

Our first dinner was Seafood Chowder, prepared and delivered by Mick Hargreaves and his helper, Gale Dyer.  Desserts were donated Birthday Cakes “gone astray”.  The chowder was superb and enough for a few more meals. No complaints except that everyone ate too much.

Monday started with a hearty breakfast of Eggs, sausage, hash browns and fruit prepared and delivered by Laurel & Wayne Macauley.  Laurel scrambled eggs for everyone, using her coach stove!  A good way to start a day of exploring the area.

Dinner was Pulled Pork in a bun with Asian Slaw.  This excellent meal was prepared and delivered by Avis and Lou Ten Have.  Desserts were “Fruit in a Bucket” provided by attendees and more cake, squares, etc.  We followed this with a 50/50 draw and a game of Card Bingo.

Tuesday at 10:00 AM everyone (almost) formed teams and set out on a Mystery Hunt.  There were cougar and bear sightings in our area, but we found a lot of other native animals and someone even thought they found a “killer” beaver.  As usual, some of the ladies did a little better than the gents and it was suggested that the RCMP might want to hire Lynda Daniel as her investigative skills are so good.  I think everyone had a lot of fun and a few laughs as well.

Appetites were stirred after the hunting trip and we had a wonderful lunch of European Wieners and Kraut in a bun, prepared and delivered by Wolf and Barbara Schlichting and their Sous Chefs, Linda & Brian Bowden.  Wolf wanted the buns “fresh” so he drove into Campbell River early in the morning to get them.  Very tasty!   Later in the day each coach brought vegetable contributions to the “Hobo Stew” for dinner.  Chef Mick and his helper Gale once again pulled it together for us.  And again, we are all very generous and we had enough stew for an army.  We all contributed to desserts with cookies and squares. A few of us followed dinner with games of “Left, Right and Center” and “Pass the Ace”.

When all the sleepyheads were up and at ‘em on Wednesday morning, we started a Bocce game.  We resumed and had another game after lunch and naps.  Lots of fun and some more good laughs.  Later, we all started thinking about our contributions to the pot luck dinner.  Some had brought canned chilli to add to a pot.  Soon Mick had the pot growing and without some stern supervision, we would again have had enough to feed an army!  A few more items, salads and buns made an excellent meal.  Ice cream cones were delivered by Lynda and Keith Daniel and appreciated by all.  More “Pass the Ace” and my next Laundromat trip is free!  During the week I won a total of $21 which did not include my own contribution! Winner of the Ken Williams Award is Bert & Rita Ward, who get their rally fees returned.

A really great rally, again, with thanks to all who attended.

Port Hardy Rally

“Christmas in July in Port Hardy”.    Brrrr!  Not so!  We actually had weather as good as the rest of the island and better than some places.  Luckily, we did not have torrential downpours!

Laurel & Wayne Macaulay really raised the bar again.  This rally was in the planning stages a year ago and it was very evident!  Laurel did a lot of smart shopping and beautiful crafting to put on an event of this calibre and still make money.  Port Hardy provided some great hand-out packages with gifts, which Laurel supplemented with 2 Christmas Trivia games, Christmas Sudoku, and Christmas Word Search. Breakfast every morning and big dinners every night. We were all offered tours of the Hardy Buoys Fish Cannery, the Aggregate plant, a fishing trip, a run on a Pilot boat one evening to take a pilot out to guide a huge ship through the straights, and a Whale Watching tour, where they were lucky enough to have a huge Humpback Whale breech right beside the boat!  In between that busy schedule and eating, some of us actually did some exploring as well. We visited some very good Museums and saw beautiful, lush country, with lots of wildlife and many scenic views.  Deer were plentiful and so were the bears.  Also, ongoing during the week, we were busy building Christmas centerpieces and ornaments for competition.  Laurel had a bin full of supplies for everyone to work from and some really beautiful creations appeared.

Port Hardy is a small town with some economic distress.  The Macaulay’s, with the help of rally attendees, raised some $300 and 7 boxes of non-perishable food items for the local Harvest Food Bank.  Every evening we exchanged a food item for a chance to win a door prize.  As Laurel had about 80 – 90 door prizes we collected a lot of food!  Half of the 50/50 draw, one night the total, went to the food bank as well.
One evening we were entertained with “Christmas Bingo” – e.g. under the “N -bells”, with a  $2 donation for the food bank we could play all games and win prizes of huge, beautiful,  gift baskets. Another night we had Reindeer races and some of us beat the odds!  Every evening there was a campfire and good camaraderie.
The highlight was Christmas dinner with all the trimmings.  What a feat putting together turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, yams, gravy, stuffing, peas, carrots, green bean casserole, cabbage rolls!   And then pot luck Christmas desserts just to make dinner settle in properly!  We had a “handmade by giver” gift exchange which proved just how very talented we all are.  Gifts were useful, beautiful and crafty.  All treasures!

Again, there are not enough descriptive words to do this rally justice.  Laurel, Wayne and their few very busy Christmas Elves worked Miracles this week.  Thank you.

A GREAT RALLY IN SIDNEY!

(Scroll down for the next Rally at Port Hardy.)

Many thanks to Ian & Lyn Van Treight for the use of their place for the rally!  Due to our wet spring, a week before we were to use it, the field in Sidney was used for a Carnival and their rigs had to be removed with an excavator.  Kudos to John and Susan Van Schaik for checking around and finding another site so quickly.
On an unhappy note, Susan Van Schaik had a fall the night before the rally after setting up and was taken to hospital to have a very bad break set on her arm.  A few days later she actually underwent surgery to have plates put in the arm.  We hope Susan recuperates well and quickly.  She had some great volunteers to help her pull things together.
The weather was good but cool and a few furnaces were running.
Friday night for dinner each couple was given a whole roasted chicken and the meal was completed with pot-luck sides and desserts.  Wayne and I had another meal and sandwiches from the chicken.
Saturday morning was a continental breakfast and a then the meeting was called to order.  Because the Executive felt some changes should be made to the by-laws, elections have been post-poned until the new by-laws come into effect.  The proposed new by-laws were gone over by the membership and 30 days notice will be given before the final vote which will be at the Port Hardy Rally.  Swap meet tables were set up and some made purchases and some made money!  Lots of fun!  We then had part of the day on our own until time for Bean Bag Baseball in the afternoon.  The game was a huge amount of fun, lots of hecklers and jeering, but both teams did well.
Dinner was a humongous "BBQ it yourself" steak each, baked potato, salads and desserts all provided by the rally hosts.  (Wayne and I also had another meal with the leftover steak!)  Afterwards, some warmly dressed people stay out and played card Bingo.  Lots of cash prize winners.
Continental breakfast again Sunday morning and then everyone helped dismantle the tent and headed home. Another great rally thanks to John & Susan Van Schaik and their crew!

National Directors report

NOTE: Details of the Spring Rally in last Post below.

Tuesday, April 12, 2011

The Planning Meeting for the FMCA rally this June has just wrapped up and there are some items I want to pass on to you. To begin, at the business meeting it was announced FMCAssist will pick up where Medex left off with no interruption of service. New cards are available for print at the fmaca.org website. Of particular interest will be the seminar at the Rally regarding all things FMCA.

The next National FMCA Convention will be held in Madison, Wisconsin, August 2011. Andy & I will be attending and I am asking that you read the candidate’s resumes in the June 2011 FMC Magazine. I will vote as the Chapter advises me to vote. In addition to National elections, there will be issues of interest to our membership.

After a fair amount of discussion regarding the NW Area rally in 2012. the rally will take place at the Mill Casino in Coos Bay, Oregon, June 14 -17, 2012. The Casino has made amazing concessions and offers and it was decided to give it a try to see if this could be a successful venture for us. There was even discussion to make this a ‘friends and family’ rally, thereby allowing just that, friends and family members who are not FMCA members to attend. More discussion will ensue at the next Planning Meeting this September in Lacey.

It was decided to hold the 2013 and the 2015 NW Area rallies in Moses Lake, the 2014 and 2016 rallies will be held in Albany, Oregon. It was reported that we get better pricing by committing to 2 years at a time as opposed to a year by year basis.

Should you be holding off making plans to attend the FMCA rally in Albany this coming June because you need minimal electricity to power a CPAP, there are 13 sites available with 10 amp power. These sites are available at a low cost, on a first come, first serve basis. Please contact Neil Radford at 206-718-0091 PRIOR to sending in your registration form (available in your FMCA magazine) to make sure Neil has a spot for you, then complete your registration form. These sites will go fast and there are only 13 of them so please act fast if this concerns you.

Tickets for the Ladies Luncheon will be $10 and Pat Spofford and Karen Pratt are planning a fashion show. Our own, President Sandy Quesnel is the Chairperson for the Parade. If you are attending, please let Sandy know, as I am sure, she would like your input in the planning of the parade.

There will be seminars, bingo, an ice cream social, 2 dinners, 100 show coaches (and you know they are ready to deal!) FMCA merchandise, welcome bags, door prizes, vendors, entertainment Friday and Saturday evenings, coach repair available by several vendors and the opportunity to meet and socialize with members of the other 39 NW Area Chapters!

Thanks and safe travels!

National Director, Vancouver Islanders

Sandys Scribbles Mar 2011

Sandys Scribbles

Here we are, the start of another fun year! I hope everyone had a good winter and that this finds you all rich and happy in every way!

Mom & Dad, Wayne, Joey & I, just arrived in Yuma last week. We had a really great 4 months in Mexico, although it was a little cooler than usual.

Now, I am getting excited about the coming year and just can’t wait to get a rally schedule together. The first rally of the new season will be May 27 & 28th at Sydney. John & Susan Van Schaik and friends will be hosting. You have plenty of time to schedule this in, so hope to see you all there. A rally in Port Hardy in July is in the works.

If we are going to have as much fun as possible, we need just a few more sites. HOSTS ARE NICE, BUT NOT NECESSARY! What we need are pleasant sites to park our rigs. If your preference is for an RV Park, now is the time to consider booking. A level field, retired log sort or lumber yard, parking lot or fairgrounds are excellent.

Hoping to hear from you as soon as we all get home, with a few ideas. Email me at skew67@hughes.net

Have some fun every day and drive safe.

Sandy
