SANDYS SCRIBBLES
For anyone interested we have an "almost free" rally August 14, 15 and 16 at Meadowood General Store in Qualicum. Buy your dinner at the store one night and get 2 nights free stay! This venue was one of the stops on our Roving Rally and we all enjoyed our time there. It is a great base camp for touring in the area. Once again, we are able to enjoy a weekend at Westcan Terminals on Cowichan Bay. The site will be available for the Labor Day weekend, going in on the Thursday evening, and leaving on Monday, September 3rd. Because the site is shrinking, we may need to establish a "second" row. This is a no host Rally, dry camping, NO UTILITIES! The cost is $12 per coach, per night, to camp on some of Vancouver Islands most beautiful waterfront. One evening will be Pot Luck and I will be making reservations for the waterside room at the Rock Cod Cafe for dinner one evening. Please book early to get your name on my list! Any other joint meals will be decided on site, otherwise YOU must provide for yourself for all other meals. Please drop me a note if you plan on attending to. smkew67@yahoo.com
Our sympathies to those unable to attend the Derby Rally in Comox on July 5,6 &7th. Everyone attending had a great time, were well fed and enjoyed the interaction of The "Derby". The venue is quiet, beautiful, close to the Framers Market and not too far from town. The placement of electrical and water made it possible for everyone to hook up if they chose. It was so nice to see the Club tent up again...it has been a long while since it was used!
As usual our Pot Luck dinner the first evening was delicious. Nice to meet and greet new members Garry & Lucy Brown and visitors Gordon and Helene Berkey. Hopefully, we didn't scare them off on their first visit. A few rounds of Pass the Ace and off to bed.
Friday morning, the Breakfast crew provided coffee and Ham & Egg bunwiches from 7-9 AM. Most of the ladies and a few of the guys gathered in the afternoon to work on Derby hats and Hobby Horses. So many thanks to MaryAnn Tennent for the assistance she gave and her donation of lights for the hats. As quoted by one of the male onlookers..a dizzy tizzy ensued! Dinner was a hearty Derby Burgoo and tiny new nugget potatoes followed by Berry Shortcake. We were joined by the talented Darren GEDDES who later performed for us. His knowledge of so many different songs and collection of music is impressive! And he can sing! A very entertaining evening provided by Clarence & Darlene Zimmerman.
Saturday morning was a change of plans, so we had Laurel Macauleys recipe for "Teddy Bear" porridge for breakfast. That Maple Walnut ice cream sure dresses up the porridge! Off to visit the local Farmers Market next door for shopping and some lunches and back for the judging of the Hats and Horses. Hopefully, we have some pictures available so everyone can see some of the creations. The talent in this Club is unlimited! There were some beautiful hats and some beautiful Hobby Horses. There were also some very "manly" Hobby Horses which created quite a scene when the frilly fillies were approached. Congratulations to Rita Roy for her absolutely astounding Derby hat! All of the hats were winners, but Rita went all the way, even dressing for the occasion. MaryAnn Tennant and I were next best. Wayne Quesnel, Dennis Ross and Gary Tennent got prizes for horses. Again, many thanks to MaryAnn Tennant for her contribution of prizes for the Hat and Horse winners. Great job!
Clarence & Darlene Zimmerman made arrangements for Pizza Hut to deliver our dinner, which was delicious! At Maryann's suggestion, we all reverted to teens again, while enjoying our Root Beer floats for dessert! Lots of fun! So very nice to just sit back and enjoy without worrying about anything. After eating our fill of Pizza, it was "Off to the Races". All Hobby Horse participants lined up and after several heats were finished there were very clear winners. Wayne Quesnel won the "Race for the Roses" by a good two lengths, followed by Marg Hazelwood and then Darlene Zimmerman. Wayne won a free rally and the blanket of roses while the ladies each won a trophy and ribbon. Lots of laughs, participation and noise!
A Continental breakfast was put out Sunday morning and the majority stayed to dismantle the tent. Lucky for us, we were able to put everything away dry.

VIFMCA Derby Rally July 5, 6 and 7.
The Vancouver Islanders are extending their very gracious invitation to our "Derby Rally" to be held at the Comox Fairgrounds, on July 5, 6 and 7th. Every coach will be provided with 20 amp electric and water hookups.
We will start this exciting weekend with a Meet and Greet Happy Hour, followed by a Pot Luck dinner. Entertainment will be provided for the evening.
Friday morning breakfast Egg Bunwiches. Later on, MaryAnn Tennent will be helping everyone with their Derby Hats and Hobby Horses. Bring your own hat or hair band, and a glue gun if you have one. Some decorations will be provided. Dinner will be traditional Kentucky Derby Burgoo followed by Derby Pie.
Friday evening, once again Darren Geddes will be joining us with live music/trivia.
Saturday breakfast will be Derby "Hot Browns" another traditional Derby food. Once again an opportunity to work on your hat or horse or if you prefer, the usual lawn games. We will also need a "crew" to assemble the Racetrack.
Saturday evening, Clarence and Darlene Zimmerman will be providing a Pizza Party. Following dinner the Derby Races, Hat and Hobby Horse judging.
Sunday morning will be an easy Continental breakfast, and quick clean up and departure by 11 AM.
The cost of this rally is $150.00. This includes the actual camping fee of $30 per day per coach ($90) which also includes a portion of the fee for the venue. The rest of the fee covers payment of some hat and horse decorations, entertainment, meals and prizes. This will be the last organized rally this year. There will be more rallies, but they will be "no host" with no planned activities. Please try to join us!

Sandy's Scribbles + Derby Rally
The first Rally of the 2018 season has finished and we are already moving on to the next! The group had the use of the Scout Hall once again, and the 3 refrigerators and gas range were a big bonus! We had 18 coaches register for this rally, and 17 managed to arrive at some point. Because of the collision at Goldstream on May 24th, 6 of the coaches were caught on the Victoria side. Arnold & Judy Aronson chose to come via Saltspring Island, and Cliff and Lynda Garbutt joined us by using the scenic Port Renfrew route. Now these are dedicated Rally attendees! Luckily, the Potluck was evenly shorted by 2 salads, 2 main and 2 dessert! It worked out perfectly!
Most managed to join us on Friday in time for the AED demonstration, some even managed to arrive in time for Pancakes and Sausage. The AED demo (Automated Electronic Defibrillator) was very informative and we have ordered one for the club. In the near future, a few of us should have our CPR certificates updated.
Clarence and Darlene Zimmerman did bring along their Giant Jenga game, and we all enjoyed a few hilarious rounds before dinner each night. The EXTREMELY talented ladies in our group managed to put together a dinner with Ham, Baked Macaroni and Cheese, with salads, rolls and Berry Shortcake while playing baseball and, as usual, beat the men.......AT THE SAME TIME! Way to go Judy Bell and ladies!! After dinner we gathered round for Card Bingo.
Saturday morning we finished up the Ham with scrambled eggs and hash browns and cleaned up in time for the Annual General Meeting. The Executive welcomes our new Secretary - Lynda Schwagly, 2 new Vice Presidents - Gary Tennant and Cathie Woodrow and our returning National Director - Andy Balogh. Saturday seemed to be a lazy afternoon, just visiting and sitting in the sun. Many thanks to MaryAnn & Gary Tennant and cohorts Sue and Rick Boyce for preparing delicious burgers with all the fixings, to go with pasta salad and Potluck desserts. A few of us stuck it out to watch the movie "The Post". I found it to be a very good movie, but we were plagued with problems with our sound system, making a challenge to stick with it. Audrey Hauge provided very tasty popcorn.
Sunday morning was a Continental breakfast and then packing up, cleaning up, and hooking up! 6 coaches chose to stay an extra night, some making up for the lost first night due to the road closure. I certainly enjoyed just relaxing.

This facility is a large, level, grassy area with 9 utility units which each provide multiple 20 amp and water hook-ups. We will be using our dining tent and shelters. Everyone is encouraged to make a Hobby Horse for the races and the ladies will be needing "Derby" hats. MaryAnn Tennant will be helping the ladies with a "hat class" for those wishing assistance or help with refinement. Clarence Zimmerman is inquiring about live entertainment and arranging for a Pizza night. Plans are to make this the biggest rally of the season, so please try and join us! Vancouver Islanders Rally May 25 - 28, 2018
Spring is Sprung!
We are sure hoping Spring will be sprung by Rally time! The facilities at the Cowichan Exhibition grounds have changed, so our sites will be a little différent this year. An equipment storage shed has been erected in the middle of the big parking area we used previously. We will need to move our parking further along, around the Boy Scout hall, as we have previously. Electric outlets will be very limited, so a considerably higher charge will be levied if hook-up is required.
Once again, we will be sharing the venue with a local charity group, who will be hosting a Lobsterfest and dance in the big hall. We have been invited to join the event, but I am still waiting for a cost for our group, as I did not feel we would want to pay $25 per person.
For those of you wishing to attend, I am setting the Rally cost at $120 per unit, 2 people included. The cost for singles would be $95. This price covers 3 breakfasts, 2 dinners and entertainment. If we are joining The Lobsterfest, prices will be adjusted accordingly.

SANDYS' SCRIBBLES
I wish health and happiness for everyone in 2018 and a year full of fun and games!
Wayne and I left home late this winter, amidst all the ice, snow and freezing rain. We have just been in Yuma for a week now. Rushing away can prove expensive, as I left my bin with all my warm weather clothes back home, as well as part of my meds! Nothing too serious, but a lesson about hurrying too much.
For those of you anxious to get your 2018 scheduling done:
May 24-27 Cowichan Exhibition Grounds. Changes have been made at this venue. There is now an equipment storage building in the centre of the parking lot we use. Parking is available elsewhere around the buildings, and depending on numbers we may move to the Scout Hall again. As well, we will be sharing the grounds with the same Charity event as last year, so moving over beside the Scout Hall would be preferable.
June 21-24 Northwest Area Rally - Milling around at Coos Bay. Kathie Balogh, our local representative, is finishing her current term as Northwest Area President. Please show your support and come on out to this Rally for some good fun. Let's try to send Kathie home with some real fanfare!
July 5-8 The Rotary Bowl at Comox Valley Fairgrounds. This is a new venue for us. It is a very large grassy area, with some electrical and water. A short walk through the trees to the river and still close to amenities in town.
August 3-6 Cowichan Bay(tentative) This area has been shrinking in the last few years, but still a beautiful place to hide for the long weekend! We will need a front and back row, not everyone will get waterfront. As well, there will be less "key" issues!
September has nothing booked as of yet.
As always, hosts or meal prep teams are needed. Please step forward and take a turn.
