Cowichan Exhibition Grounds Rally

Here we are at the start of yet another season! I hope everyone is healthy, happy and ready to play!


Our first rally will be starting Friday, May 25 at the Cowichan Exhibition Grounds, 7380 Trans Canada Highway,  Duncan (see directions below) and leaving Sunday May 27. Anyone wishing to stay over on Sunday night, May 27, may pay at the Grounds.  


We do have the use of a building so we can get in the shade if it is too hot. 


There will be a pot-luck dinner on Friday night, division of dishes later when we have a head count.


Bart & Linda Verruyt will be organizing a Pancake breakfast for Saturday. Coffee provided.


Don & Bev Purdy will produce a Chicken dinner for Saturday night.


I will order muffins and pastries for Sunday breakfast. Coffee provided.


Of course, we shall try and come up with some kind of interactive entertainment for you all. As well, we could play Pass the Ace and Card Bingo if you wish. Once again, I am attempting to have an insurance agent come and talk to us about Medical Insurance. Hiking trails and the road up to the Cenotaph on Mount Prevost are close by. More wineries, the Birds of Prey refuge and the Forest Museum are also close. There will be horse activities, a dog show and model airplane enthusiasts on the grounds as well, so spectators will be welcome.

Directions: I am sure there are some of you who don't know where the new Cowichan Exhibition grounds are.  They are located on the highway north of Duncan but the following are more detailed directions: 


If you are travelling from the south go through Duncan and pass by the new Cowichan Commons Mall with Walmart, Canadian Tire on the left.  Approximately 4 kilometers north of the mall you will come to a set of lights and a left turn lane which will take you up to the Exhibition grounds. 




If you are travelling from the north go over the Chemainus River Bridge, past Russell Farms Market on the right.  Go approximately another 5 kilometers and turn right into the Exhibition Park which is at a set of lights. 


You will not be allowed into the grounds until 11:00 a.m on the Friday morning.  Please don't forget to let us know how long your unit is. 


We would also like to mention that generators will be allowed from 7:30 a.m to 8:00 p.m.  Please do not run your generator for more than two hours as we all know how annoying they can be when parked next to one running continually. 


It is also important that we know of anyone needing to run a C Pap machine during the night so that we can park them accordingly.

Here we are again at the start of a new year of fun! I am sending along the proposed rally schedule for 2012 and hope all of you can make it to at least 1 rally this year. Details of the rallies will follow later, but I want to let you mark your calendars now.

May 25 – 27: Cowichan Exhibition Grounds near Duncan

June 20 – 24: Northwest Area Rally at Coos Bay, Oregon

July 18 -22: First Nations Campground at Qualicum Bay

August: Working on Cowichan Bay

Sept 13 – 16: Pacific Playgrounds, Black Creek ( This rally

will include full hook-ups for everyone)

Cowichan Bay in August is still pending, the rest are booked and deposits made.

MEXICAN FIESTA at COWICHAN BAY

Great weather, great food, great fun! This rally started off with everything right! 44 rigs in attendance including 7 “Family & Friends”. Some of the folks living in Cowichan Bay were very envious and came over to enquire about joining us. We have 2 prospective new members! Thursday evening after a wonderful pot luck dinner, we all enjoyed Spanish Bingo provided by Laurel & Wayne Macauley. We had cash prizes and then for the full card we had cash and a huge basket stuffed with Mexican treats. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed a fun evening.

Pancakes, fruit and sausages started Friday off and then day trips to the Cowichan Exhibition, exploring or just enjoying the sights around our rally area. Like last year, otters, seals and many kinds of birds were sighted nearby. During the day a Piggy was roasting on the fire and at dinner we ate her all up with beans and salad. Josie Williams supplied desserts which included a beautiful Mexican Tres Leche cake. This “3 milks” cake was a real hit. Also, Empanaditas, little filled pastries typical of Mexico. Three more layered desserts rounded out the meal. After this we began the “Veggie Races” which were very entertaining. Rhonda Unicume and Audrey Hauge made racers which managed to stay together long enough to win their categories. Bob Orr presented a frozen cantaloupe with an axle through it and wheels drawn on. The cantaloupe made such a superior racer that the judges decided Bob should win the distance prize even though Bob entered a “fruit”. Nice job, Bob!

Saturday began with Ham & Eggs and another warm and sunny day. Quite a few people went into Duncan to check out the Saturday Market and came back with treasures. Some folks picked blackberries and some just ate them! Tacos were served for dinner with a huge bowl of contributed fresh fruit. 40 people participated in the “Minute to Win It” games and the roar of the crowd was overwhelming. Lots and lots of laughter.

After a continental breakfast Sunday, the draw was made for the Ken Williams award and won by Gary Giles. Gregs’ RV in Duncan generously supplied a gas campfire for a door prize and new member Bent Pedersen was the grand winner. The tent was dismantled, trailer stowed and 23 of the attendees left. We had 21 units stay over for another night and leave Monday morning. Another very good rally!

Scheduled for 2012;

MAY end of: we are trying for the Cowichan Exhibition Grounds for a “Many hosts” Rally.

JUNE: We discussed going as a group to the Northwest Area Rally at The Mill Casino in Coos Bay, Oregon ... should be lots of fun.

JULY: We shall try for the Native Campground at Qualicum Bay.
